  • An actual conversation I had this morning with a toddler parent.

DCP: Do you mind if I come in so I can change DCK? She threw up in the car. She isn’t sick or anything. I think the car ride jumbled her milk and made her spit up.

Me: *immediately smells that infamous throw up smell* Sorry, DCD! They don’t spit up at that age and my policy states they can’t be here if they are vomiting. I’ll see you guys Wednesday!

    • By 3 pm today I sent home the last kid. COVID, again. The last round went through last December. Everyone's was mild, but flu-like. Temps above 101 and obvious illness.

This week (well 2 days), nobody went above 99.5, none sustained for an hour at a time. Fluctuated throughout the day (I would notice cheeks flushing, some asked for blankets/jackets). Only one had a dry cough, minor. One had a clear, slightly runny nose. All were eating and playing pretty well. BUT all were complaining of muscle and head pain (some verbally, some non-verbal).

      1. One kept pushing his shoulders against a wall and squatting.
      2. Another kept wrapping the dress up clothes as tight as she could over her thighs.
      3. Another kept stacking the biggest blocks over his blanket on his lower back while laying on his belly.
      4. Another kept rolling the thick drumsticks back and forth over his legs.
      5. One infant kept pushing her head on the floor while her little legs were still standing up.
      6. The last infant just kept growling and low, deep humming in the morning.

      I had a suspicion, I was correct.

Weird one, this round. All seem to be doing well, two parents tested positive as well. Just really weird.

At least everyone will be out and back at the same time, again.

That was a good catch on your part! I might have wondered why the kids were all acting so strangely but I don't think I would have put two and two together like that! That's actually a good list of behaviors to keep in mind.

Not glad they have covid but at least, like you said, all can come back now at the same time. My families have all been sporadic....have a mother and grandfather in same family positive right now...the child hasn't been in attendance....will test before he returns. Stay safe!

Bleh, I am being a horrible provider and wishing some of my kiddos would stop dancing on the line and either get better or get sick. None of them have symptoms that are technically excludable but together as a group, they are driving me insane! Part of it is me and my current mood/state of mind and the other part is just a group of "needy-kinda-sorta-sick-but-not-really-sick" kids all spending the day together.

Low grade temps under 99F, snotty noses, dry coughs, whininess to the max, restless nap times and bird picking meal times.
Tested weekly for COVID and all negative.
It's just cold season in my neck of the woods.

      • We are hiring for a position in our daycare and we interviewed a girl and the interview went great she was experienced and exactly what we needed (or so we thought) told her what time her shift started and when to come in etc. Today was her first day and she was a no show so our administrator sent her a message via messenger to her to ask if she was coming in & to make sure nothing happened. The girl never messaged back come to find out she BLOCKED our administrator on messenger. Guess she didn't want the job after all

She told our administrator at the interview that she got fired from her other job (as a daycare provider so thats where the experience came into play) because she had to take off because her grandparent died & when she came back she got told to find another job by the owner of the daycare

          • Dh is having surgery on Thursday. It has been scheduled for two months. We found care for our kids. Got the time of the surgery last week. Monday, days before surgery, they call him and tell him that they called him to Pay

I don't have a problem with paying up front. My issue is that they didn't discuss prepayment or give him an estimate until days before the surgery.

Not everyone has the cash to pay with out a reasonable notice. What would happen if we didn't have enough money. Wouldn't be beneficial to them to give a pre estimate when surgery is scheduled.

He told them he was working and to call him back after 4. I not sure if they expect him to pay over the phone or what, but we don't have an option to do that.

Annalee that is where my issue is, that he wasn't told when he scheduled the the surgery and then all sudden we are told days before the surgery this is the cost and you need to pay before hand.

Alwaysgreener; yep, it's crazy for sure! We had to pay ALOT up front for a procedure dh had and, at the time, we had a carecredit card which is strictly for medical use so we use it and within weeks the money was put back on the card from the surgery center.....so they misfigure the amounts as well but I'm sure they want to protect themselves.??

DH and I have had several surgeries and had to put pre-op expenses on my card or care credit every time. It is why I always have an emergency credit card. Care credit is awesome for medical, they give 12 months interest-free for most procedures. The hospital usually has a payment notice on its website.

Yes, mostly for the “parenting by negotiation” that was mentioned in the other thread, with a whole generation of kids not being able to see past themselves or hear “no”.

Agreed! I have four that are kindy ready and counting down the days!

            • DCM texts late yesterday afternoon asking about names for Valentines Day. Never mind that I send a message home about it in our monthly news letter stating IF your child wants to bring Valentine's Day card, just sign them from the child. No need to make them out to each child as none of them can read and we don't make a big to-do about this particular day since it's not really about the kids and it's just another excuse for kids to feel they should get something (chocolate or gifts ).

I replied "We have 12 kids here including yours. just have her sign her name" DCM replies that she has specific items for specific kids... Grrr... I tell her that she can come and "hand them out"/put them in specific cubby baskets in the coat room in the morning as I wont send out specific names of DCK's, She says Ok.

FF this morning and they don't show up. I text asking if everything is ok (they had a carbon monoxide leak previously and 2 family members were hospitalized) and asked if DCG was still coming. DCM replies "Oh yeah sorry DCD was suppose to text but DCG's grandma showed up last night and she spent the night there. If you are having a Valentine's Day party grandma will drop her off about 12:30-1:00 (we eat at noon) but if no party, she can just drop her Valentine's off sometime after 3:30"

I replied back that we aren't having a party PER THE NEWSLETTER and that she can save her Valentine's for tomorrow as some my kiddos begin getting picked up at 2:30 so no point in coming with them after 3:30.

              Parents are so unorganized!!

Another DCM drops her 2 yr old (new 2) and says "Grandma gave her a box of chocolates for Valentines Day this morning. I told her she could have one piece. I went to the bathroom and when I came back she had eaten them all so I just wanted to warn you she might have diarrhea today".

I just said, "Well then she might get sent home."
DCM says "Even if it's just from too much chocolate?"
I replied "Diarrhea is diarrhea no matter the cause so yeah."

              SMH.

              Facepalm. Who are these people?

My reply: "Oh, wow, ok. At each little table the bigger kid on the left is the big brother/sister to the little brother/sister on the right. As the title of the album states "Valentines Breakfast with my little Brother/Sister". For COVID, we felt limiting exposure of the big siblings *to their own sibling* made the most sense."

Truthfully, the whole thing was just an opportunity to get the parents to update/confirm addresses, employers, emergency contacts and infant feeding plan paperwork. lol!! The cutesy breakfast/free food just gave them a few minutes to do it before taking the big kids to school/bus stop.

It is rare that every child in care has an older sibling and I grabbed the opportunity. If not everyone could have participated, I would have figured something else out. YKWIM?

            • I had someone do drop in care last year twice in January 2021 when their provider was closed. They asked me what their total was for last year so they can do their taxes. I just roll my eyes because its less than $100 so i kinda find it pointless to even consider for taxes and the fact that it was so low they couldnt even remeber how much they paid. Why do i have to be everyone’s accountant? Dont they know how much theyve paid for childcare?
for the breif time my oldest was in childcare, all i ever asked for was the EIN or SS number. I knew how much i paid for childcare..or its really simple to look through your bank account and find out…

I just had this come up as well. I gave out receipts to families before I had an app.

A termed family asked me their account total and my EIN a couple weeks ago. My response was “I have mailed a W-10. You can find your total by adding up all the receipts I gave to you after you paid.”

I always wonder how many of those $ 30 drop-ins for one-day parents have used providers EIN's to claim the full $8,000 (for one qualifying individual) or $16,000 (for two or more qualifying individuals).

I am wary of drop-ins for that reason, not just the drama they typically bring.
