Would This Bother You?

Every now and then, a grandmother will come to my house when one of my clients picks up their kid. The grandmother doesn’t come inside, she sits in her car and gives the client whatever she has to give her and sees the kid for a few minutes.

One time, grandma even came to the door and stood on my porch because she “just couldn’t wait” to see her grandkid. She wasn’t there to pick up, just meeting my client. So I made grandma sit on the porch. That didn’t get my point across.

Am I overreacting or would this bother anyone else? I just feel there is a time and place and my home isn’t the place.

EOW, Non-custodial parent's mother, after divorce? I'd be a bit more lenient with permission from both parents. They don't get to see the grands but maybe once per month if their kid only sees them twice per month. I'd ask the parent to put her on the pick-up list to get the kid after nap and have the parent meet them at a local park for pick-up. Easy peasy, yet so few ever think of it.

If the parents are still together and they are just unorganized, I'd tell them no more meet-ups at my house. I'd direct them to the same city park.

I like Cat’s response. But just adding, this would irritate me too. Why do they think this is okay?!! This is a residential property! Not a Walmart parking lot!

I think it’s rude when my own guests show up unannounced. I don’t feel as though this is any different!

This issue is why I LOVE my outside drop off/pick up...NO ONE comes in except state personnel. Just throws a kink in my day so I don't allow drop-in visits.

It would bother me, too. First of all, it's kind of rude for her to just assume it's ok to be on your property without invitation but pick up time is busy enough without her trying to visit with her grandchild. Also, doesn't having her on your property pose an additional liability risk? If she tripped and fell while walking to your porch, could you be held responsible for medical bills if she broke her leg, for instance? If she really wants to visit her grandchild, I'd do what CH said and suggest she pick the child up and meet the parent(s) at a nearby park or other location away from your property.
