  • Food program

I chose to downsize my daycare to where I will run unlicensed. I am so excited to have my own business without any say or oversight from the state. But with that comes the loss of the food program . I am so sad about this, especially because they are keeping the higher rates for another year. I have seen other providers say that if you didn't do the food program you would still receive the money at the end of the year in taxes, you just have to record the meals/snacks. Does anyone have a confirmation on this? I emailed my CPA but she has yet to get back to me. My license expires at the end of September and now I am second guessing my choice without ever seeing that money.

I believe it depends on your state, but I could be wrong. I keep track of all meals and I write them off on my taxes. I am allowed so much/meal. I can’t remember exactly how much. A childcare management app/Excel program will help you track this.

Also, I’ve been told legally, unlicensed programs can be on the food program. Have you confirmed you're not eligible for it anymore?

I had to wait until I got licensed to be on the program so I assumed I wouldn't be able to stay on. But I am due for a visit anytime and can definitely ask her!
      Thank you!
