  • Diarrhea Again

How do you handle diarrhea? One diaper and a call home? 2 diapers? When can they return to daycare?
I dont consider diarrhea in a 2yr old ever normal and think after 1 episode they should go home. Whether its the fault of antibiotics, parents over feeding fruit/whatever, or sickness. I dont think its something providers should have to deal with.

Like you mentioned, it depends on the age of the child and what is "normal" for them.
If it's an older child (2+) I would send home if it was diarrhea but not necessarily if it was just loose BM. You can tell the difference between diarrhea and loose BM's pretty easily IMO. If it's a loose BM, it could be from Halloween candy, nasal discharge or something else they ate or who knows... if it's sour smelling and downright nasty, they go home as it's more than likely diarrhea.

If it's an explosion and out the legs or up the back, I would probably send home them home but wouldn't be as cautious as I would be if I thought it was a one time thing.
Most times a kid with diarrhea is sick in others ways too so it's not just the diarrhea that would be the deciding factor.

I can deal with it once but twice.... they are usually sent home.

Whenever a child has diarrhea, im usually throwing up the next day. Even if the only symptom the child has was the diarrhea once. This makes me super paranoid lol. The child had a watery diaper this morning and it smelled horrible. I sent a warning text to mom and let her know if it happens again, he will need to be picked up.

The smell alone usually tells me....I'd err on the side of caution and tell DCM that in light of all the illnesses going around right now you prefer to play it safe and send the child home. If the child has a normal BM then they are free to return but I see no reason why you should have to be the one to wait it out...kwim?

I would send the child home.

I send home after two diapers, unless other symptoms are present, then they are sent home after one. They can return once they are free of symptoms for a full 24 hours.

Like you, whether it’s from too much fruit or whatever… I’m not dealing with it 🤷‍♀️

Reading you ladies comments and after having a child here who's poop started off smelling absolutely like an dead animal to him not even being able to poop a month later let me know I made the right decision in terming the family. See when it comes to poop here I sent home after two blowouts with no other symptoms or one blowout if other symptoms are present I also pay attention to the color of the poop because that sometimes tells us if a child is sick or not so I made sure to send home a poop guide to parents that explains the consistency the coloring how often and winter if I should be sending home so they know what will happen should poop become a problem

I lie and call for pick up after 1 incident, I tell the parent it happened twice. Diarrhea is nasty period. I don't care the reason.

My very first family, Dcg had diarrhea so bad that it was pure liquid and there was so much that it poured out as I opened the diaper and ran over the edge of the pad, then down onto my carpet and my foot.

I required a visit with the doctor. Doctor writes a note that child has "toddler diarrhea" and can return to day care. I look it up and found it is a thing or at least a diagnosis the some doctors give.

I allow her to return, (only family in care at the time) because mom says she will get fired if she misses any more time.

I end up super sick and had to close (that is another story). It wasn't but a few weeks later she was fired due to attendance.
            Good Bye

Omg a doctor gave us the toddler diarrhea diagnosis for my DD when she was little too and I pushed Back and said ‘how do I fix it?’ And they gave us a referral to a specialist and said they didn’t know. The next few days told us it was a horrific stomach virus:
That same doctor told us that my other DD (complex medical needs/immune compromised) was hearing totally fine and called me a ‘paranoid mom’. That DD has needed 5 sets of tubes in her ears due to an issue with draining and when we switched doctors, they thought she was deaf because of how badly she failed the infant hearing test:

              I truly dislike lazy doctors

I make a note in Brightwheel if a child is acting a little bit off or has a loose bowel movement or a rapid-fire string of bowel movements but we aren't yet at the point where it's clear that they are sick. That usually helps soften the blow if they get a text from me a couple of hours later saying that the child needs to be picked up. Of course, that doesn't help if it comes on suddenly.

                this might be gross, but there’s a different smell for sick poop/diarrhea. If it smells sick, then they go home. If it’s questionable, I text a heads up that there’s one instance and if any other ones or any symptoms ar all, they’ll need to be picked up;

This happened to me years ago when I first started out.
I also had an incident where a dcb had diarrhea, parents told me it was from drinking too much juice. I told them I was excluding for the diarrhea regardless. Diarrhea is diarrhea period. Dad picked up and got really nasty with me, yelling, telling me I can't handle my job with kids ect. I was very uncomfortable in that situation and termed.

i had a similar situation with diarrhea from laxatives. I got literally covered in poop and they forgot to bring a change of clothes from the poop blow out the day before. Dad told me I obviously hated children if a little poop bothered me and he slammed the door… I’m usually super calm and avoid confrontation, but the door slamming Infuriated me and I opened it and told him to freeze and he rolled his eyes and I put on my mom voice and reemed him a new one. Should’ve learned and just termed when they begged me to keep them and apologize. That same dad was a jerk about a month later and it was a nasty term..

if people show you their true colors, believe them the first time
