  • Getting Baby Ready

Hi. My granddaughter is here ! She’s perfect, gaining weight, nursing well, sleeping ( or not ) in her bassinet for now. Mom and dad are doing good and getting the hang of things. Here are what she’s great with so far that will help with transition to daycare :
    Taking a bottle
    Being held by different people
Sleeping on her back, no blankets or toys
Getting used to different sounds around the household

These are issues that have to be worked on a little :

She needs to be held a lot. ( she’s very young right now, so I think that will work out )
She feeds frequently, and slowly. ( Again, that may be age related )
She is being swaddled for bedtime, ( I’m not sure if daycares can do that. )
She spits up quite often, so needs to be held upright for a while after a feeding. ( obviously not much can be done about that. )

I don’t think she will start to daycare for a few more months, ( she’s 7 weeks ). What do you think should be the focus to make things easier for baby and the daycare when she starts ? Mom works almost next door to the daycare, and dad is saving up some time off for baby sick days. Any other suggestions ? Thanks.

Offer plenty of floor time (belly and back) during her wake time so she gets used to not being held all the time. Half of the infants I've had were not used to being put down and cried when on the floor. I would get them used to being on the floor at daycare and have to start all over again every Monday because they were held constantly over the weekend. I'm not against holding babies, but give them time to play on the floor at some point while they are awake. It's very hard on the baby and provider if they are used to being held all the time because we have other children to attend to.

I think she is doing everything right so far.
So much will change in the next few months so I wouldnt worry too much.

Swaddling IS allowed in my state but not all providers feel comfortable doing it so not sure about that one where you live.
Feeding frequently is common as is slowly but again that should change in time as she grows and becomes better at it
Spitting up is also common. Half the babies I've had as of late, need to be held upright for so long after feeding. Nothing most providers can't work with.
Same with being held alot. She's little. The need will change as she grows provided she is given floor time and opportunities to not be held as well.

Its worrisome for sure but it sounds like mom and baby are on the right track and will do just fine when the day comes to start daycare.

CONGRATULATIONS on the new grandbaby too!!

Thanks BlackCat. I don’t know why I wrote her age incorrectly, lol, she’s only 4 weeks. I am going to help watch her until she starts daycare( between when mom goes back to work and daycare starts , which won’t be until maybe August. I will do what I can to help the transition go smoothly.

Biggest thing I can suggest is keep a simple routine (east, activity, sleep is a typical one) that’s not a set schedule, but just a routine so baby knows what to expect. Also making sure she can atleast do naps in a crib/pack-n-play by herself (no holding during naps or laying down in bed with baby during naps). It’s a lot easier for baby to adjust when things are kept the same between home and daycare. Otherwise, enjoy your sweet little one while she’s still tiny 🥰
