Glasses on Littles

My ds3 is getting glasses. His vision is bad and he will have to wear them all the time. I think that he may keep them on like the doctor said but worry that others my take them off him.

Anyone experience having glasses on a child in day care?

Any books about glasses that you would recommend to read to the kids? (Or short video for my son)

Our son had eye surgery and was given glasses at 8 months. So we dealt with trying to keep them on him and later in preschool from others taking them off him. We used an elastic type glasses holder strap.

I have a dcg5 now who has been wearing glasses since she was 3. I wear reading glasses so the kids always want glasses because dcg is like Ms. xxxx. Go to Amazon and search childrens books about glasses or google them....I haven't purchased any in particular, but since the little girl got glasses there are many books where someone in the book has glasses on and the kids are sure to notice....they all want glasses now that xxxx has them and her's are purple so that's really cool to them She has the life-time waranty where they are like jello and bendable.

I did search Amazon for books there's a lot. I was just hoping somebody had a favorite versus going through the long list.

The straps help tremendously. Just make sure you keep them clean like you would any clothing. I don't know why, but many parent simply don't think to wash them. Staph grows in them, too and they stay wet from sweat. They also abrade the skin from time to time, so there is a greater risk if not kept clean. I had my kids rotate them out with their shirts, daily. They go in the wash after bath time, just like the rest of their dirty clothes.

You are so right, people tend to over look little things like that. I did when my daughter started school last fall, she started wearing a lanyard with her mask. After a couple weeks she got a little rash. After that we started washing and rotating them.

I was in the 1st grade when I got glasses and have worn them for years when I got them, the opthamology tech told me that if anyone tries to wear or get my glasses I need to tell them no. We had a child in our center that wore the ones with the straps and they worked well and we had two children that had glasses and their mom every morning never did clean their glasses but expected us to do it

The rep took her time measuring and making sure the glasses fit correctly, then we paid extra to get these things that go on the glasses legs and wrap around the ears. If you google easy twist children’s glasses, you can see what I’m talking about. My daughter is developmentally delayed and I was so worried, but she did great: no one tried touching her glasses at preschool and she kept them on.

My dcg5 places her glasses in her cubby at nap and gets them afterwards...has followed this protocol since she was 3 and it works....no one seems to pay attention to it; it's just part of our day for this to happen.

I only have one book about wearing glasses. It's an "Arthur" book by Marc Brown called, "Glasses For D.W." I can't say it's the best book out there but the kids seem to enjoy it when I read it to them.

Picked up DS's glasses yesterday, he is doing well wearing them. He however had one lens popped out before we even got home. And today he took them off at Grandma's house and wouldn't tell us where he put them.

I was happy to see that they came with two straps and a warranty.

I first got glasses when I was in first grade and I hated them! I refused to wear them until I was in 2nd grade and the nun yelled at me to put them on because I couldn't see well enough to read without them. The embarrassment of being yelled at in front of the class was worse than the humiliation of having to wear them, I guess. lol It took years before I could appreciate better vision over personal vanity. My adult son and daughter inherited my astigmatism and have always refused to wear their glasses. My dd got contacts as soon as she could afford them and my ds wore glasses when he was young but once he hit school age, refused and still refuses to wear his glasses. I wish I had some words of wisdom to offer but I haven't done such a great job with my own kids when it comes to glasses. Good luck with your son!

I had glasses in 1st grade too but mine were for reading. My DD got some fake glasses and been wearing them to help him to adjust, actually she's jealous that she doesn't have real ones.

Ds is so cute, he walks around lifting his glasses to see the before and after. I am so proud of him.

We've had several with glasses. I've never had anyone even think of taking them off of themselves or each other...
Kids often ask "why is Jimmy wearing glasses?" so we explain and they move on. (We did have one little boy who had a very small nose and his would fall down all the time, he asked me to tape them on for him a few times :P)
