Registering a Business

Not licensing, but for those have registered your business with your state/city... has anyone looked into registering as a non-profit? When I ran a daycare we were LLC, but now that we are doing just preschool, I was looking into doing non-profit and be able to do some scholarships! I'm not sure exactly the process or if this is even a possibility, so I would love to hear your experience!
