  • Twin Toddlers Found Dead in Car in Daycare Parking Lot

"Rutherford said the day care staff was not involved or complicit in the deaths. She wouldn't say who had driven the children to the center, other than saying it was a "parent," citing the ongoing investigation by the Richland County Sheriff's Department." - Bryson and Brayden McDaniel, who were 20 months old. - Twin baby boys found dead inside car at South Carolina day care - CBS News

The twins, Bryson and Brayden McDaniel, were believed to have been in the vehicle for nine-and-a-half hours before it arrived at the day care about 5:30 p.m., Wednesday afternoon, and 911 was called.

I thought maybe she got to the daycare to pick them up, not realizing she had left them in the car all day while she was at work.

However it happened, it’s horrific. 😔

From their local paper it seems Dad arrived at daycare 530 pm to pick up and found kids not there, while they were calling mom and morning teacher to figure out what happened another parent found them in their car seats in the parking lot. Seems they were put into car seats at 730 am. No information is available about any time in between. It is a really confusing story.

Cat Herder this makes no sense

    This breaks my heart

I never understood how anyone could forget their child(ren) in the car. It has never made sense to me. My car (and most cars now days) have sensors to check the back seat. If I open the back door to put something in the car, it will ding when I get out telling me to check the backseat.

This is devastating. I am interested to know exactly what happened here. It makes no sense. I really hope it was unintentional.

And... no charges filed. Work pressure.

"Lott said the father had been under intense pressure at work, and his "mind had been somewhere else" that day. Lott said the father believed he'd dropped the boy's off at the daycare. Hours later he drove to the daycare to pick them up, but they'd been inside the SUV the whole time. He didn't realize what happened until he went into the daycare to talk to the staff and pick up his children.

Are these kids just silent when parents are driving? I guess I could understand an infant, but two almost two year olds?! I'm always looking in my rear view or talking to kids in the back seat, I just don't get it!

But don't you understand, the men have brains intended to think about work? One can't expect a man to avoid negligently killing his children.

              Very sad for this family.

Drat. I was just angry until there were faces to go with the story and now I am tearing up and getting that stupid phantom milk-letdown feeling that I get whenever my own (SCHOOL-AGE) child starts crying.

So many times when I hear the stories about children being left in the car it makes me wonder what can be done to fix the problem. These new Tesla cars have eight cameras on the outside, why not have one camera on the inside that after a car is turned off, and there’s movement inside, it notifies the owner. My Ring does that on my iPhone when anything moves in my backyard. For one, the inside camera would notify an owner if someone’s breaking into or stealing stealing from a car and two, it would notify someone like a child was left in the car.

They could make it a car seat feature, too, instead of forcing people without kids to foot the bill for distracted parenting.

"Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford, who also answered questions about the case today, is asking all parents of young children and anyone who cares for young children to make sure that any features in their vehicles that give alerts to check the backseat are turned on.

She’s also asking daycare facilities to establish SOP to call the parents of any children who are absent."

                And parents agree:

                "Marie S.
I personally think that daycares should contact parents if a kid(s) are absent just as most grade schools do, now. Imagine how many children would probably be alive. Just my opinion 🤷🏾‍♀️. As a mom of twins, my heart goes out to everyone affected, parents, family and daycare staff etc

                Leggs L
Marie S. my thought exactly…. When did they stop doing that

                Marie S.
Leggs Leo it should be a DHEC requirement, just like teacher/ child ratio, meals etc"

I typically do send a quick text, if I haven’t heard from a family by mid-morning. However, making it mandatory scares me….it puts at least part of the liability on us when these things happen.

Exactly. There is a call for this every time a death like this occurs. I can’t imagine managing that. When’s the cutoff? Do I call if they’re not here by 10:00? What if it’s a “6:30” baby? Will 10:00 be too late to prevent tragedy for that child? Do I have to have hourly phone calls based on arrival times? Only when it’s hot out? Who’s watching the kids while I do this? Why is this our responsibility? NO.

Oh, yeah, put the responsibility on anyone but distracted parents. Lets make ignoring your children normal. People don't forget kids in the car that they were talking to on the way. Parenting time, drive time is also parenting time. Hang up your phones, pull your head out of your a$$ and talk to your kids. Period. Dot.
