Carrying Children Who Can Walk?

My parents hand off the child and I set them on my washer and remove their shoes, then put them on the floor so they can walk on their own, (except for the baby).

I have the parents text when they arrive and then they would stop at the bottom of my steps, set down their child to walk up the steps. At the top of the steps, I would check them over and take their temp. Then invite them inside to start our day.

Maybe revamp your drop-off so that you stay six feet apart.

I dont want to tell them im having surgery though. Any suggestions?

If I didn't want to tell parents about the surgery, I'd just say something like, "My back has been feeling a little sore lately. Would you mind putting him down so he can walk in like a big boy? I don't think I can carry him right now." Good luck with your surgery!

I love that all the people that made fun of my "over the top" illness, decon and arrival policies are now following the same ones 10 year later. lol! I swear, it makes a world of difference in how every part of our day flows. The kids just do better when this place is "ours" and the parents world ends at the door.

I think this arrive/depart outside has helped my news kids to become independent and self-regulate quicker than before when parents tried to linger around like they wanted their kids to cry for them.

As soon as I walk out, I hand the parent the clipboard for their signature. I then take two steps back. In my other hand is the IR thermometer and mini-light. If the parent is holding the child, they have to put them down to sign their name. If they try to hand the child to me, I tell them to put them down. Once they are down, I then take their temp, check their eyes, nose, mouth, lymph nodes an over-all impression. I then take back the clip-board, take the child hand, say goodbye and open the door for the child to walk in with me.

I put them down at pickup as well....I went to the Fair last night and took my 17 month old great-niece out of stroller to carry a little while and my hip is telling me I shouldn't have done this as I try to work today! (insert oh my goodness, why did I do that emoji..LOL)

I too do pick/drop at the door. I see this with several families. I just take the child from the parent, set the child down and let them walk inside the house.

Ill be having surgery soon where i wont be able to lift more than 20lbs. I noticed today that Im finding myself carrying children who are over 2yrs old. I have parents exchange child at the door because no longer allow them in because of covid, but im not sure why they arent having their child walk in and are passing them to me insted lol. When they go home, they walk to their parent. I need to break this habit before my surgery. I think its the parents who have a hard time with this actually. I dont want to tell them im having surgery though. Any suggestions?
