Not really apples to apples, but I closed last year. It made more financial sense to be in my shop full time, and definitely was better for my family. But yeah- I miss the “fun kids” part of it occasionally. Then I remember the crazy a@@ parents, the late days/ too early mornings, and the other less than awesome moments.Good news- it does get easier. But yeah- it can suck sometimes when you’re not doing something that was in my case a big part of my life for over 2 decades.
If it’s the kids you miss maybe look for a volunteer thing you could do occasionally. Something like a zoo, kids museum, a school, etc.

It wasn't run to my standard and the pay was awful so I quit. I decided to go into a new field and I am happy with that but I am missing having the children around. I miss having my own daycare and all it entails. I would run it super different today, then I did back in the cities. But I miss it.
I am currently not in a place where I can have that again but maybe someday.
My heart is sad and I miss all my babies.
