I have a current family that told me they will be moving because Dad got a new job and he starts in March. I asked what the kids’ last day would be and she said she wasn’t sure yet. I assumed it would be March and it was originally suppose to be. Well I filled their infant spot for June and was going to take another family temporarily until the other infant starts so I messaged them yesterday for a last date of care and she said their plans have changed and they would like to keep the kids in daycare until late August/early September when their house is done being built. In my excitement to be able to keep them longer I told them that would be fine and then realized later that it’s not because I have the other infant starting in June now. So now I got myself in a pickle and I’m not sure how to handle this. Any advice would be appreciated. I am going to look into a variance, but I don’t have specific dates for start and end so I’m not sure how that works.

If a variance isn’t possible you will need to choose between your business and your feelings.
I understand wanting to keep kids you like longer but business wise, the infant is where your long term profit will be as the family leaving will be leaving.
If you aren’t able to get a variance I would just tell the family leaving that you unfortunately filled their space based on their notice of withdrawal. I’d explain that you jumped the gun in your excitement to keep them but you have to do what you need to do.
Can you expand your license and/or hire an assistant to help?

I had something similar happen (a family change their leaving date and expect to be able to stay, but I filled the spot). I told the “leaving family” that I would check with the “enrolling “ family and see if they had any flexibility with their start date. That showed that I was willing to help, if I could. You could tell your “leaving” family that you looked into it and your new family needs the originally given dates and so you unfortunately won’t be able to keep them on after June.

I always land on the side of the most stable candidate with longevity.
That would not be the family who is leaving and changing their mind.
Once the slot is filled, it is filled. My goal is financial stability, not making friends.Last edited by Cat Herder; 02-22-2022, 10:12 AM.
